The HH adoption process:

  1. Click on the profile of an animal of adoption interest.  Click on the grey "Apply for Adoption" button.

  2. Hero's Heart reviews the application, does a full background screening, and contacts the applicant within 1-3 days.

  3. If approved, the applicant is connected with the foster caregiver, or the contact ​at Bark and Beyond or Petco.

  4. The applicant meets the animal of adoption interest.  If it's a love match, an adoption day/time is arranged.

  5. The adoption is processed at Bark and Beyond (Grand Rapids for NN North) or Petco (Ridgedale for HH South).

  6. All adopted animal and vet information is sent via email to the adopter.

Why do we charge adoption fees? Hero's Heart is all-volunteer run.  Adoption fees account for the costs of preparing animals for adoption.  Compare this to typical out of pocket vet costs up front for a "free" cat or dog.

*If you see a notation about FIV+ on a cat's profile, here are the FIV+ facts:

-FIV is a retrovirus that compromises a cat's immune system
-FIV not transmittable to humans or dogs
-FIV+ cats can live with other FIV- cats in a cat-stable household
-FIV is transmitted through saliva in deep bite wounds, not shared food/water dishes or litter boxes
-FIV+ cats can live normal lives in a clean, quiet household
-FIV virus is easily killed with soap and water
-FIV+ cats should have yearly vet checks and monitored for any changes in health
-FIV should not be confused with Feline Leukemia, which is a serious diagnosis
