Go door to door within a 3 to 6 block radius and ask neighbors if they are missing their pet. DO NOT automatically give the found animal to a person who says "yes"; ask to see a photo and/or for a description of the pet.
-
Provide fresh water, food, litter box (cat)/bathroom breaks (dog) and safe shelter for the animal.
-
Contact a rescue or shelter if the animal is not claimed: https://www.herosheartrescue.org/_files/ugd/5bb5e4_c7158c114e734fbab0d8d8c067238e2f.pdf

What to do if your cat is missing:
-
Put familiar blankets and toys outside of the house or where the cat may have exited; cats have an excellent sense of smell.
-
Immediately alert neighbors, ask friends to help look, and provide a good color photo of the cat for reference.
-
Put up flyers in your area with a good color photo and detailed description.

Check with animal control, local shelters and rescues to see if any cats have been relinquished with your cat’s description.
-
Get a live trap (local humane societies loan them) and bait it with rotisserie chicken. Place the trap in a quiet, climate-comfortable and weather-proof space and cover the back half of the trap with a weather proof cover. Check the trap hourly (every 15 minutes in extreme hot or cold weather.)
